Meet Our Team
Jake Barnett
Clinic Director | PT | DPT | OCS | IDN | CF-OL1
Jake was born and raised in Rome, Georgia and is the oldest of the two Barnett children. He graduated high school in 2013 from Armuchee High School. During his time in high school, he played offensive and defensive lineman in football and ran/ threw shot put and discuss with the track team. He was named team Capitan for the football team his senior year at Armuchee.
After finishing high school Jake decided to attend Berry College where he would play football at the NCAA Division III level. It was there that he became interested in fitness and how that can be used in healthcare. That passion for fitness and his desire to serve people lead to his decision to attend physical therapy school. He finished at Berry with a bachelor’s degree in Exercise science. During his football career he was a part of the inaugural football team and went on to help lead the Vikings to a conference championship his senior year as a starting offensive lineman he was also a part of the SAA Academic Honor role in 2016.
Following his time as a Viking he attended physical therapy school at Samford University and graduated from there with his Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) in April of 2021. During his time there he was the class president in 2019 and was able to participate in several high level clinical experiences including Ultimate Edge Sports medicine in Birmingham and Advance Rehabilitation in Rome, GA.
He recently married his wife Bailey Jo May 29th, who he met in physical therapy school. He and Bailey have aussiedoodle named Tuk. They are excited to be a part of the Daphne community and begin to plant roots in the area. He and his wife love to try new restaurants, exercising, spending time with family and friends.
Michael Burnette
PT | DPT
Michael was born and raised in Woodstock, Georgia. He started playing soccer at age 3, and proceeded to play club soccer and school soccer year-round through high school. He graduated high school in 2013 from Etowah High School.
After finishing high school, Michael decided to attend the University of Alabama and graduated with a Bachelor’s of Science in Chemical Engineering with a Pre-Medicine focus. While in school, he was introduced to CrossFit and began working out with physical therapy students who combined their passion of fitness with healthcare. Each summer, he volunteered and led medical mission trips to Central America. While applying for medical school, Michael felt God was leading him to take time off and go into the missions field full time.
In the fall of 2017, he joined Youth with a Mission (YWAM) and began serving at a missions base in Kona, Hawaii. Throughout the 3 years involved, he participated in missions efforts in Turkey and Nepal., where he spent time involved with local organizations and trekking bibles into the Himalayan mountains.
During Michael’s time as a missionary, he saw the opportunity physical therapists had to impact people’s lives through direct, face to face care. He saw the impact that musculoskeletal injuries had on mental health, their ability to provide for their families, and ability to participate in everyday activities. With this, he saw how physical therapists were specifically equipped to help with these injuries and return people to the quality of life they desired. This led him to pursuing a Doctorate in Physical Therapy at Samford University, where he graduated in 2024.
He is married to his beautiful wife, Lauren, and they have a son, Malachi Valor. They enjoy exercising together, hiking, trying coffee shops in every city they go to, and visiting family.

Shay Black
Front Desk Coordinator + Billing Coordinator
Shay joined the Refine Family full-time in June of 2025 and serves as a Billing Coordinator for all clinics and the Front Desk Coordinator at the West Mobile office. She loves welcoming patients and supporting the team.
Most of Shay’s childhood was spent in Cincinnati, Ohio, where she grew up playing soccer and learning the value of teamwork. She later attended the University of South Alabama, and after graduating, she spent a year and a half teaching English in China. She went on to work with Campus Outreach at Troy University, investing in the students and helping them understand what it means to walk with God.
After moving to Mobile in 2004, Shay spent a year working as an administrative assistant at Grace Community Church before transitioning into bookkeeping for the church, a role she served in for more than a decade. During this time, she also homeschooled her daughters and later taught at Cottage Hill Christian Academy when her daughters began attending school there. Shay also served as the assistant girls’ soccer coach during her time at CHCA.
Shay lives in Saraland with her husband, Shane Black. She is the mother of two daughters, Becca and Ruby, and she is also grateful for her relationship with Shane’s twin daughters, Gabbie and Jocelyn. No matter how busy life gets or where everyone’s paths lead, Shay values staying connected and cherishes the time they spend together.
Outside of work, Shay enjoys simple routines — spending time with family, staying active, and being involved in her church community. She enjoys being outdoors, reading, knitting, and finding small ways to bring beauty and calm into everyday life.
