Joshua Abshire Doctor of Physical Therapy at Refine PT and Performance Gulf Shores AL

Joshua Abshire

PT | DPT | LSVT-Big | DN

Joshua was born and raised in Mobile, Alabama, and the surrounding communities of Lower Alabama. Growing up, Joshua was fortunate to participate in baseball and kickboxing. Although he did not have a single injury that led him to physical therapy, he always knew he wanted to pursue a career in healthcare. He became drawn to physical therapy through its unique ability to use exercise and movement to help people overcome limitations and transform their quality of life.
Joshua attended the University of South Alabama, where he graduated magna cum laude before earning his Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) from the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
As an outpatient physical therapist, he enjoys working with patients across the lifespan and a wide variety of conditions. He has a particular interest in neurologic and vestibular rehabilitation, including neurodegenerative conditions, balance disorders, vertigo, and stroke. He also enjoys treating all orthopedic conditions with further focus on the shoulder and neck. He became LSVT-Big certified in March 2026 to further specialize in treating individuals with Parkinson’s disease and other movement disorders.
Joshua believes effective physical therapy starts with understanding the person behind the diagnosis. He strives to provide empathetic, evidence-based care while helping patients understand their condition and take an active role in their recovery. His goal is for every patient to feel understood, empowered, and educated throughout the rehabilitation process.
Outside of the clinic, he enjoys strength training, reading, and traveling. Joshua values staying active and continuing to learn, and he enjoys bringing that same philosophy into his practice. His goal is to help patients build confidence in their bodies and return to the activities and lifestyles that matter most to them.

Fantastic team of therapists! Sarah Williams guided me through my knee replacement recovery and she was amazing! She knows when to challenge and push hard, and when to back off. I highly recommend Refine PT!!

Steve

I recently completed physical therapy for pain and mobility issues in my hip. My physical therapist, Cynthia McInnis, was fabulous! I am amazed at the strength and mobility that I regained, as a result of working with Cynthia. She customized each of my PT sessions to meet my current needs and provided me with the highest level of care. I strongly recommend Cynthia and the Refine PT staff. From the office manager/receptionist to the entire team of physical therapists, everyone is friendly, professional and very competent.

Michelle

Refine Physical Therapy is amazing. When you walk in you are greeted by the best office manager I have ever had contact with, Kristi. She has greeted me by name ever since we met. I was surprised to see that Refine has a whole team of physical therapist constantly working with patients. Your therapist greets you and stays by your side during your entire session. You are never left in a room by yourself. You are at a station where your therapist stays right with you. My therapist, Cynthia has actively been there for me at every visit. She has made me so comfortable with this process. Cynthia has shown me stretches and exercises that have helped so much. She also treats me with dry needling. FYI, the dry needling is amazing!
It has helped so much with the pain. Six months ago I injured my neck. Two and a half months ago I started physical therapy. I had very little mobility in my neck. My MRI showed two bulging disc and a tear in my neck. The pain was so bad that I could not turn my head to the left at all. The right side was limited as well. I had pain in my shoulder, down my arm and into my hand. My pain was so intense. I did not want my body to move. I went to the hospital emergency room. The doctor at the hospital emergency room recommended Refine Physical Therapy. I am so thankful that he steered me in the right direction. Just two and a half months at Refine with Cynthia and my pain has gone down significantly. I can turn my head, move my arm and go about my daily task. I am surprised by how much progress we have made in two and a half months. I highly recommend Refine Physical Therapy!

Tiffany

I highly recommend Refine PT. I’m in my late 60’s with excellent health and fitness, but recently experienced sudden sciatica and back pain. Under Sarah’s care and expertise at Refine I gradually worked through the physical setback and recently ran in my first 5k race in 2 years. The Refine staff are caring and are expert physical therapist.

Al

I am extremely happy with my therapy at REFINE – Foley location. Cynthia is very knowledgable, caring, and works to understand my needs. I love that I have the full attention of Cynthia, who has a Doctorate in Physical Therapy, for each entire session. I feel valued, and feel that I am getting the best possible therapy. She rejoices with me in my progress, and encourages me along the way. I am making great progress, and highly recommend Cynthia at REFINE – Foley location. She’s the BEST!
